Scene, routine and automation: what is the difference?

Platforms use these words differently, but the practical distinction is between a saved group of device states and logic that runs automatically.

Scene

A scene usually represents a desired group state such as evening lighting.

Routine

A routine can combine actions and sometimes triggers or conditions.

Automation

Automation usually means the system runs without a manual command when defined conditions are met.

Platform terms vary

Read the current ecosystem documentation rather than assuming the same word means exactly the same thing everywhere.

Keep in mind. Compatibility is not permanent. Confirm the current manufacturer, platform and certification information before purchasing, resetting or migrating a device.
